Picking up our Camper and the Asheville Test Run

“Mom am I supposed to live in that? Its hardly bigger than my doggie bed” ~Migo

Things seemed easy when Josh and I decided that we wanted to purchase a fiberglass egg RV. But as with everything, there are many, many options. There are a few major companies- Scamp, Casita, Eggcamper, Boler, and Burro. Some still manufacture, others are available only as vintage models.

The question of what company to go through really depended on what we wanted. They all kinda look the same from the outside, but layouts and features vary greatly. In the end, I decided that the Casita’s 17’ Spirit Deluxe model met all of our needs. It has a dinette that folds down into a queen sized bed. A separate two seat dinette, a shower, toilet, and can be upgraded with a 4 cubic foot refrigerator. This setup seemed the most doable for us. We would be living small, but we’d be living in comfort too.

We started pricing things out a bit for a used camper. Apparently  these things really hold up. I found fiberglass RVs from the 70’s and 80’s that are still going strong. But while I love the look of vintage, I figured that it would be a lot easier to purchase an RV with new components and style it to look vintage than to make endless repairs as things go out. Josh and I are busy and neither are particularly handy.

About a week after researching, I came across a woman in Tennessee selling a  2015 17’ Casita Sprit Deluxe. OMG! That’s exactly what we wanted. Never mind that we were in the heart of our wedding season and hadn’t planned to actually get anything until November. A used Casita like this is rare- especially within driving distance. Better yet, the lady who was selling it went all out with the upgrades- she got the awning, extra large fridge, vinyl floors (as opposed to carpet), built in AC unit, and additional outdoor shower (that will definitely be handy for Migo). She had just driven all the way to Texas to buy it this summer (you have to go directly to the factory to buy these campers new), but then later decided she wanted something bigger. She had just listed it on the used Casita forum a day or two ago. From emailing various people prior, it seemed to us that these used campers sell very quickly.

Before making the trip up to Tennessee, we had a lot to do. We had to get a hitch on our truck (oh yeah, we had already traded in both our tiny hatchbacks for a Toyota Tacoma) and figure out all the stuff for the electrical harness. The whole thing almost seemed too good to be true. But after venturing out to pick it up in Tennessee, we met the sellers- a very nice older lady and her partner- we saw it was the real deal. The lady was so sad to see it go, but I told her we’d take care of it.

Conveniently, there was a KOA just down the road from the sellers house, so we could do a little test run and get used to things before making the 6+ hour drive home. The day we picked the Casita up also happened to be my birthday (dang, what a present Josh!) so we spent the next night in Asheville to Celebrate. It was fun trying everything out for the first time. We learned a lot in those first two days!

Most of all, we just felt so grateful to be really taking steps towards living our dream. That night we spent in Asheville off the French Broad River was picture perfect. We enjoyed listening to the water, taking in the views, heading into town for some Mellow Mushroom pizza, and just relaxing. We know we have a lot to learn about this new lifestyle, but it will be part of the adventure.
